The Saint-Illiers-la-Ville underground natural gas storage site is located around 15 kilometres west of Mantes-la-Jolie, in the Yvelines department, close to the Eure and Eure-et-Loir departments. Its central station is in the locality known as "Chemin de la Vallée des Prés", 1.5 kilometres northeast of the village of Saint-Illiers-la-Ville.
The location of the site's facilities was chosen to limit their environmental impact. The cleared areas have been kept to a minimum and the surface facilities have been painted in colours to make sure they blend with their surrounding environment.
This storage site is equipped with high performance compression technology thereby eliminating all greenhouse gas emissions and significantly reducing noise pollution. It is also equipped with economizers on the dehydration units to remove liquid waste and improve the quality of the atmospheric emissions.
Type: aquifer storage
Type of gas stored: type H (high calorific)
Geological strata: upper jurassic
Reservoir depth: 470 metres
Number of operation wells: 31
Number of control wells: 18
Maximum storage volume: 1,500 million m³ at STP*
*m³ at STP = cubic metres at standard temperature and pressure: quantity of natural gas which at 0°C and under atmospheric pressure occupies a volume of one cubic metre.
