H2eart for Europe is a European alliance formed by the CEOs of the twelve leading European storage companies.
Committed to promoting the decarbonisation of Europe's energy system, these operators have focused on the mass deployment of underground hydrogen storage (UHS) to support the development of renewable energies.
During the inaugural event in January 2024, in the presence of Maroš Šefčovič, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, the alliance operators had highlighted the significant gap estimated between the storage needs required in 2030, estimated at 45 TWh to meet the REPowerEU objectives, and the 9 TWh of storage projects currently being planned.
In July 2024, with the participation of Kitty Nyitrai, Head of the Decarbonisation and Sustainability of Energy Sources Unit at DG ENER, the same operators unveiled their roadmap, focusing on potential future European funding schemes for hydrogen (H2) storage.
The event was extremely well received, attracting around a hundred participants from a variety of sectors, including decision-makers, industrialists, researchers and consumers. The debates were very rich, with exchanges on several themes crucial to the development and financing of hydrogen (H2) storage.
About H2eart for Europe
H2eart for Europe is an EU-wide, CEO-led alliance committed to accelerating the decarbonisation of the European energy system at the lowest cost to society by scaling up the deployment of underground hydrogen storage (UHS). Launched in Brussels on 23rd of January 2024, the alliance aims to provide fact-based reports and analysis that can serve policymakers as guidance, and that utilise and build on the experience of our members, leading companies paving the future of hydrogen storage across Europe. We are committed to invest in scaling up UHS infrastructure to meet the flexibility demand in a decarbonised energy system.
