Storengy unveils the results of its market survey for Underground Hydrogen Storage in France

Storengy recently presented, during a webinar* held on April 11th, the results of its market survey for underground hydrogen storage in France. This confirms the strong interest of the French market and the development opportunities related to underground hydrogen storage in salt caverns. It will enable the next steps to be taken, including discussions with various stakeholders for access to these infrastructures.

At the end of 2024, Storengy launched a market survey to specify the market needs (hydrogen traders, producers, users) along the French section of the future European hydrogen backbone. This backbone is expected to interconnect the networks of the Iberian Peninsula with north-western Europe, passing through Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany.

Respondents declared 27 projects**, mainly located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and Grand-Est regions. These results validate the pace of development of the demand for underground hydrogen storage solutions in salt caverns. They also provide the means to specify market expectations in terms of technical performance.

Key Trends for the Development of Hydrogen Storage

The analysis of the responses collected highlights two important needs:

  • For the majority of respondents, security of supply is an essential need that hydrogen storage must meet.
  • Flexibility of use is also highly valued, with a notable preference for fast storage types.

Furthermore, customer expectations in terms of pricing for underground hydrogen storage are consistent with ongoing techno-economic studies.

Towards the Implementation of Solutions Adapted to Market Needs

Based on these insights, Storengy can now engage in discussions with Market stakeholders for the development of hydrogen storage in salt caverns. The next steps will allow:

  • To specify the definition of specific needs regionally and by use. Storengy is already very committed to the subject with several projects, such as GeoH2 (Geomethane) in Manosque (04), HyPSTER in Etrez (01), and three exclusive research permit applications (ERP) submitted in the Grand-Est.
  • To evaluate the conditions of access to these infrastructures.
  • To deepen techno-economic studies to prepare the implementation of adapted hydrogen storage solutions.

Hydrogen Storage: A Strategic Lever for the Energy Transition

Underground hydrogen storage is a key element to ensure the flexibility and competitiveness of the renewable hydrogen market in France and Europe. By enabling better management of production and demand fluctuations, these infrastructures will play a decisive role in securing supply, providing flexibility to energy systems, and optimising the costs of low-carbon hydrogen. With this initiative, Storengy confirms its commitment to developing a robust and sustainable hydrogen sector, serving the decarbonisation of industry and European energy independence.
