Natural gas consumption varies significantly according to seasons, days and time of day. Underground gas storage provides reliable and continuous gas supply all year long. For example, it makes a vital contribution to covering peaks of consumption in winter or at certain times of day.

Located close to consumption sites, underground gas storage facilities provide a local and short-term source of physically available gas. As a result they guarantee security of supply and avoid load shedding and the waiting time caused by the transport of natural gas by pipeline or LNG tanker.
Gas storage provides a response to exceptional demand or temporary disruption of a source of supply (due to technical, economic or political factors, for example). Thus, storage can help reduce the economic and social impact of a supply outage.
